ABSTRACT



The study is a descriptive survey
designed to examine the causes and effect of performance trend in Mathematics
in Senior Secondary School Examination
in AMAC FCT Abuja. A total of fifty
respondents of which fifteen are teachers and forty are students were selected
from five secondary schools in AMAC, FCT to form a sample size.  The study used both primary and secondary
source of data. Primary data was collected through administration of
questionnaire to both teachers and students in the selected schools. The
secondary data are collected through the use of
WASSCE mathematics results of Students who sat for May/June
WASSCE from 2010/2011 – 2014/2015.
A test and retest
method was used to determine the reliability of the questionnaire items. The
data collected from the field through the administration of questionnaire was
organized, using frequency distribution table, simple percentage and
non-parametric test of significance known as Chi-Square (X2) was used to test
the hypotheses formulated.
All
the hypotheses were tested and validated at 0.05 level of significance. The findings
show that there is significant difference in the pattern of students’ performance
in Mathematics in WASSCE. The finding showed that students’ performance varies
from years to years and schools to schools depending on methods adopted by
teachers. The finding showed that: (i) there is fluctuation in the pattern of
students’ performance over the years under review, (ii) the observed and
predicted performance rates indicated that over 50% of the candidates passed at
credit level over the reviewed period, (iii) the finding showed that mathematics
performance in the selected schools has been persistently poor over the years
under review similar to what has been reported for the whole nation and could
continue over the years vi.
The study therefore recommends
among others that
the
Ministry of Education should organize for more regular in-service and refresher
courses for teachers in order to acquaint them with the emerging methodology of
teaching Mathematics in senior secondary schools in Nigeria.
